Thinking modes
What modes do
A mode changes how the AI engages with your prompt: the instructions it follows, not which model answers. All seven modes are on every plan. Switch from the selector above the input area at any point; the mode you pick stays with that conversation.
Balanced is the default, and the right choice when you have no specific angle in mind. The model is a separate decision: see which model to pick.
When to use each mode
Match your task to a mode. Each entry shows when it helps and a prompt that fits.
Use when: You want a straightforward answer and have no particular angle in mind.
“What should I consider before adopting a rescue dog?”
Use when: You have a plan or decision and want the weak spots found before you commit.
“I want to quit my job and freelance full time. What am I missing?”
Use when: You are weighing options and want the evidence, with a sense of how solid it is.
“Compare term and whole life insurance for a family with two young kids.”
Use when: You need words you can actually send or publish, not advice about writing them.
“Help me write a firm but polite email to my landlord about the broken heater.”
Use when: You want to understand something, not just get the answer.
“Explain how mortgage interest works, step by step.”
Use when: You have a goal and need it broken into ordered steps.
“Plan a two week trip to Japan on a mid-range budget.”
Use when: You have something finished and want it checked before it counts.
“Review this lease before I sign it. What should worry me?”
Whatever mode you pick, a clearer prompt gets a better answer. See write a better prompt.
